1. Super Super Show this Friday

Another big exhibition at Christian Aldo’s Super Wonder Gallery opens this Friday. The Super Super Show will feature over 50 artists taking on the larger-than-life world of comic books.
My own contribution is Henchmen, the first large painting I have done since 2008. It’s a sinister piece with a psychedelic cartoon feel, equal parts Yellow Submarine, Clockwork Orange, and the 1960s Batman television show.

The Super Super Show
The Super Wonder Gallery
99 Sudbury Street, Toronto
Friday, June 7, 8 p.m. – 2 a.m.
$2 admission

2. DIY Pizza Pie app launched

New York City cooking school Pizza A Casa launched an iPad app in May to great acclaim. DIY Pizza Pie is loaded with instructional videos, tips, and recipes for making pizza at home. The colourful app is heartily embellished with dozens of my illustrations. Pizza A Casa owner Mark Bello and I have worked together on creative projects before, but the app has been particularly complex and exciting.

3. Entertainment at Volume Records

Volume, a great old-school record shop in Toronto's Mirvish Village, is currently exhibiting one of my largest paintings, Entertainment.

Drop by Volume (588 Markham Street) during regular store hours (Thursday through Saturday) to have a look, and maybe pick up some good vinyl as well.

4. The Comfort Maple Wishes To Be Alone

If you're taking a road trip this summer, bring along a full-screen smart phone. The Niagara HERE projects are now installed in locations throughout the Niagara region. These projects include video, audio, animation and augmented reality art works, all activated by scanning sign-mounted QR codes. It's all a bit newfangled, so find out all the details, a map and descriptions of all the projects at the website: http://niagarahere.ca

My project, The Comfort Maple Wishes To Be Alone, is a short animated film exploring the history of the region through the viewpoint of a cranky tree. The actual Comfort Maple is over 500 years old, so I figured it would have witnessed a lot of change. As the voice-over demonstrates, the deluded tree believes that it is the agency of these changes.

5. Arizona Sketchbook

I went on a trip to Arizona with Christine and my parents in April. I brought a sketchbook along with me, and did a page or two whenever I found a poolside table. All of these sketches are pretty loose, due either to wobbly surfaces, the randomness of my drawing utensils, or good ol’ heatstroke.

There’s nine big pages of sketches, which you can download as a PDF here:

6. The Green Man group show

I will be taking part in The Green Man group exhibition, a follow up to 2010’s wildly successful, similarly pagan, Krampusnacht show, which celebrated the dark side of the holiday season. This time the organizers are celebrating light and warmth of the longest day of the year and the return of the summer season. The group show, party and sale will be held at Nook, Kensington Market's creative hive.

The Green Man
Nook, 156 Augusta Avenue, Toronto
99 Sudbury Street, Toronto
Thursday, July 4, time TBA

Presented by Nook, Pyramid Attack, Split Element and Kensington Brewing Company
